Baptism - Chrismation - the Eucharist The Gates of Entry into the Kingdom of God
First of all, godparents must be Orthodox Christians (baptised, chrismated, and communicant in the Orthodox Church), professing the same faith as the person being baptised.
In the Romanian Orthodox Church, godparents must be married in the church (not in a civil partnership or divorced), in order to be an example, through their family life, to the person who will be baptised.
As this is a special and unique event (canonical Baptism is not repeated), godparents – as well as parents – must prepare themselves through Confession (and, if they have the blessing to do so from their spiritual father, through Communion), as well as catechesis, in order to be renewed inwardly and participate in this great Mystery with awareness and understanding.
