Baptism. What is the role of the godparent?

Since olden times, Christians have desired their children to receive all the gifts of the Holy Spirit from an early age, so they have baptised them from infancy.

Because an infant cannot declare his or her desire to unite with Christ, there was a need for an adult Christian to take on all these acts of faith, which are absolutely necessary (and are not a formal gesture, but a conscious choice).

The role of the godparent is not limited to renouncing the devil and professing faith in Christ (through the Creed). The godparent must also ensure that the baptised child grows within the Church (in early years through regular participation in the Divine Liturgy, and later through the transmission of Christian values and principles), progressing in his or her union with God.
