Chrismation. What is it and how is it done?

  • In the practice of the Church, the Mystery of Baptism and Mystery of Chrismation are performed together, with the latter following immediately after the former.
  • The priest anoints the newly baptised with Holy Chrism on their head, eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears, chest, back, hands, and feet. This act signifies the “sealing” of all of our senses with the Holy Spirit – everything we do, say and think is to be in God.

Holy Chrismation:

  • is a visible sign of the dwelling, or “sealing”, of the Holy Spirit that is offered to the person baptised;
  • makes this person a member of the Church – a sacramental union with Christ, who is both fully divine and fully human.
